Time for Turkey Treats!
What, November already?!? Thanksgiving is just weeks away and we know how thankful we all are for our pets. Last year we focused on foods that are safe to share and those that are dangerous (https://fleatreats.com/thanksgiving-be-thankful-and-safe/). This year we found a few recipes to make a special meal for your four-legged family members.
This recipe uses some of your own turkey and is quick enough to make so everyone can eat together:
Roasted Turkey Medallions from https://petstek.com/blogs/petstek-blog/5-easy-homemade-thanksgiving-dinner-recipes-for-dogs?srsltid=AfmBOooxudtQ-5qJJKiF9oOGv-kmphtycoZXOxY3doxmRa5IJ1P9MEJ3
Ingredients
- 6 oz. white meat turkey, cooked
- ½ c. chopped carrots
- ½ c. ground quinoa or oatmeal
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F.
- Place turkey and carrots in a food processor and blend until smooth.
- Add ground quinoa or oatmeal and blend until mixed.
- Roll into 1-inch balls (or smaller, if your dog is relatively small) and place them on a non-stick cooking sheet.
- Bake for 15 minutes.
This next recipe depends on whether you like to eat the giblets yourself:
Turkey Giblets from https://strawfieldpets.com/blogs/news/thanksgiving-recipes-for-your-pets
Remove the turkey giblets from the turkey cavity. Be sure to not include the neck as it contains bones. If the giblets are in packaging, remove them from the packaging. Rinse the giblets thoroughly. For cats and smaller dogs, chop them into small pieces. Place the giblets in a small pot and cover with water. Bring the pot to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, cook for 5 to 10 minutes. You want to be sure they are cooked through. Transfer them to a separate bowl to cool down.
Here’s one if you have leftover turkey:
Turkey, Cranberry and Pumpkin Dog Biscuits from https://leashandlearnnyc.com/homemade-thanksgiving-dog-treats/
Ingredients
1 cup cooked, plain, white meat turkey
1/4 cup water
1 cup pumpkin
1/4 chopped dried cranberries
1 egg
2 cups whole wheat flour
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 325F.
- In a food processor, purée the cooked turkey and water together.
- Add the cooked sweet potatoes and the egg to the food processor and blend together.
- Scoop out the mixture into a large bowl.
- Add the cranberries.
- Add the flour to the bowl and stir until the mixture forms a bread dough like consistency.
- Place the dough on a well-floured surface and roll out to 1/4″ thickness. The dough is fairly sticky, so you will need to keep dusting with flour to prevent it from sticking to your counters and the rolling pin.
- Use whatever shape and size cookie cutters that you like and cut out individual dog treats, re-rolling and cutting the dough into shapes until it is gone.
- Place the biscuits on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown. They don’t rise or expand, so you can place them close together, getting as many as you can on one sheet.
We hope you enjoy these recipes and don’t forget to garnish them with Flea Treats!!! We are truly thankful for all of our customers and wish you all the best this holiday season.
