As winter approaches, so does the occurrence of thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are a challenge for many of our canine friends. At these times, it’s important to remember that your dogs are reacting to things that are frightening to them, some of which you may not be aware (such as barometric pressure changes), and now is NOT the time for punishment or correction.
Here are some tips (credit to the American Kennel Club) for soothing your dog during a thunderstorm:
- Give them a safe space, such as their crate or a dark closet.
- Provide background noise – white noise or classical music is said to be soothing to dogs. We find the familiar sounds of radio or TV to be helpful as well.
- Provide distracting puzzles and toys such as Kong toys, lickimats, and snuffle mats.
- Use a ThunderShirt or other snug-fitting clothing – many dogs respond very well to the soothing hug of a tight shirt.
- Use calming treats or CBD (consult your veterinarian as needed)
If your dog has access to go outside during thunderstorms, remember to keep their collar and ID on. Many dogs panic at the loud noise of sudden thunder and keeping their contact information on them helps their return in case they become lost.
Stay safe and love your dogs!
