Emergency Plan for Pets

A Blog by April 😺:

I’m used to earthquakes having lived in Southern California my whole life.   Several mornings ago when an earthquake shook my bed, I realized how unprepared I would be if the ‘big one’ happened.  How would I get six cats out safely?  I have two carriers, but I doubt I’d be able to get everyone crammed in and out safely during a devastating earthquake, fire, or other emergency.

So, I need a plan. Here are some ideas:

  • Air tags/microchipping – if you cannot get your pet(s) out safely, you can find where they are if wearing an air tag.  If they are found and taken to a vet or shelter a microchip will reunite you more quickly.
  • Getting out – have leashes/carriers/pillow cases ready for all of your pets!  Leave doors and windows open.
  • Supplies – have a bag/box ready to go with food, water, bowls, medication, and a first aid kit.
  • Where to go – have a place to take your family.  Research pet friendly accommodations if family and friends are not available.

Hopefully you already have your plan and supplies, but if you are like me, what are you waiting for?  Get it together now – your pets are counting on you!!!
