Flea Treats wishes mothers of all kinds a wonderful day! While many human mothers enjoy celebrations, brunches and family gatherings, we would like to remind everyone what feline mothers experience – especially feral ones. Female cats can become pregnant as early as 4 months of age and can have an average of 3 litters per year. It’s a lot of work to find enough nutrition for herself and her kittens. Once they are born, she has to protect them while continuing to find enough food to nurse them. She has no one to give her affection, shelter, or food. She can go into heat again before her current litter is even weaned. While this life of constant stress and hard work is bad enough, there are also health risks involved. An unspayed cat is at high risk of developing a life-threatening uterine infection called Pyometra, (often appearing within two months after a heat cycle) as well as being highly susceptible to mammary cancer. Not surprisingly, studies show intact female cats live, on average, roughly 3 to 4 years less than their spayed counterparts. So, no parties, no help – just a difficult and shorter life. Thankfully, people can help by getting involved in TNR (trap, neuter, release) or donating to organizations that do TNR or offer free/low cost spay and neuter.
Flea Treats is proud to support The Little Lion Foundation (not to be confused with The Little Lion Social Club!) of Long Beach, CA. From their website:
OUR MISSION: The Little Lion Foundation is an all-volunteer run non-profit dedicated to saving and improving the lives of cats through targeted programs, education and partnerships, with a focus on eliminating euthanasia of healthy, at risk and/or treatable cat and kittens in public shelters. Our team is committed to providing quality care to every animal we help, and volunteers work tirelessly to help make the world a better place for cats in need.
